My Real Living inspired window has gone in today. I'm pretty happy with look of the fence pailings and we sourced props from our homes to complete the look! Thanks RL, so inspring!

I don't know if I've told you but we hand pick and recieve over 2000 titles every year! So what do we do to make room for the new lot coming through? That's right we have a SALE.

I've started the Hoooked Zpagetti Pouffe x I'm 3 rows off decreasing which I need a hand with! What better place to get some advice than Meetup. Tonight is the first meet of 2012 and all the girls will be back together for some chatty knitting and crochet! We kick off from 6 and finish up around 9pm.

Finally I wanted to show you my Christmas dinner. Adam and I spent two weeks at the farm building and we managed to cook a roast lunch! So happy to have had all the trimmings even though we had no real kitchen to speak of. It's amazing what you Can Do with a gas burner and barbeque!

If you haven't seen this title, you wouldn't know that this Crochet Cat, and friends, are very cheeky and love to eat, sleep and have lots of fun and adventures.

The book 'Hello My Name is Amineko' features complete step-by-step photography and instructions for creating an Amineko (In Japanese "ami means crochet and "neko" means cat) for yourself.

The little crocheted cats inside are a special breed, with BIG personalities! Each one you make will be a little different-no two are ever identical. It is amazing how one basic design can be altered in small ways to create many appearances and personalities.

So, Fiona dropped into the shop before gifting these to some little people in her life (who are sure to love their whimsical new friends!)

Hello!

I want to share with you a discovery.

One of my favourite magazines wrote about Be Genki founder Sam Sample. Who was inspired to start her own business after years of being unsure what life is all about, running around being stressed, eating badly and drinking waayyy to much alcohol!

I was intrigued so I downloaded a copy of her ‘Be Happy, Be Healthy, Be Genki e-book. Very inspiring x Thanks Sam for a kick up the behind! (And Peppermint for interviewing such a cool person).

Here's what I will be reading in the hammock this summer…

‘Super Charged Food’-This book is all about keeping it real, with simple uncomplicated and versatile recipes that will help you live a healthy lifestyle, without compromising on taste. No one will ever suspect you’re indulging in gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and sugar free food!

‘The Savvy Girl’s Money Book’ by Emily Chantiri. This one is all about becoming financially independent and it offers so many great tips so you can learn the ropes about money and investing. It’s not dry, like so many money books are, it’s easy to understand and inspirational.

’One’, by Victoria Alexander- A book about living as one and loving it. It’s not just for those living alone. It’s about everyone needing space, to keep a little of themselves for themselves. It encourages your acceptance of yourself and highlights we all need to have our own sense of self worth. It is a celebration of individuality and life. The book is a beautifully layered collection of stories, quotes, reflections and evocative images about the power of choice and about enjoying life! Very nice summer reading indeed xx

Homemade Christmas

This year, for Christmas decorations, I recycled another pallet! Adam and I made the white tree last year and our latest invention is the one covered in flowers! I know, a bit weird… but my garden is blooming with roses, hydrangeas, jasmine etc, so I think it is appropriate. After-all we do live in Australia!

I pretty much used a whole pallet to construct the tree. First we had to pull it apart and take out the nails, and then I measured each board so I could cut them into pieces that would taper upwards into a point. After that it was cut and glue and then add a few screws for stability.

Our creation is a bit wonky… we hope it makes you smile!

I love this book we have in stock and it gave me the idea for some vintage decal bunting… ‘Have Yourself a Very Vintage Christmas’ features projects inspired by the 1920s through to the 1960s and you can recreate the decorations. But the best feature of this book is the nostalgic vintage artwork that is royalty free!

I made a template and cut from thick card each bunting piece, then taped down my favourite vintage images...

A handmade-recycled Christmas… Have a happy homemade Christmas too!

We have a lovely sewing group that meets in our shop once or twice a month. We started a discussion about what we would put in a basic sewing kit and it was very interesting. Please join the conversation and add your list of items you consider essential to your sewing.
The more I think about it the more I realize that the list is not all that long if I ask myself is it essential.
I will post mine at a later date.

Our Tepee

I finished the tepee on the cover of Growing Up Sew Liberated this weekend.

It has been inspected by our menagerie and received the nod of approval. It will spend the rest of the school year in a grade one class reading corner. They are learning all about shelters this term so it will be put to good use. It will then be displayed in out shop window in January.
A great project for the little one in your life.

Container House

When you visit my house, you'll have to excuse the mess! I have a lawn mower in my kitchen and nowhere to shower yet! Actually it's pretty clean! Not as messy as when we started.

This is where it all started and it's a building site, still, 11 months later!

Over winter we had a dozer clear the land around the place to give us some fire breaks and we had a tank put in up on the top of the hill-good pressure for fire fighting apparently-and the pipe laid underground. We have cleared a gully for a dam and planted some pigs face ground cover. I have made a swing for Laila and Adam has almost finished the eaves, next job is the guttering!

Summer projects include: *Septic tank hole dug and installed * More underground pipe *Guttering *Electrical *Plaster *Tiling... geez the list is still pretty long...like it's never going to end!

We have been very blessed with this build. I don't think we would have taken it on if we hadn't the support from the family.

Adam is very handy and Ben the builder is my brother in law, my cousin in-law is the plumber, although it's very hard to get him out of the city!! And our next door neighbour is an electrician!

Tell you what, it pays to know people!

It's a family affair now, for sure, and I'm also sure they will all want to borrow the shack as their city escape too!

Laila is happy too, she will be taking over the caravan, painting and decorating it as she pleases Xx Last I heard it was going to be bright pink!

I am very proud of my husband for building us a little place to call 'home sweet home'

Summer Picnic

I just collected these chairs!

They had been abandoned and I have had my eye on them for days... Today I went and spoke to the shop owners and they were amused at my interest!

"Oh they are very rare... so rare they have been left outside..yes of course you can take them."

Call me crazy, but today is my lucky day!

I'm happy because I have been planning a 'Summer Picnic' installation at the shop. The inspiration came from one of my favourite magazines, Real Living.

I had previously collected some old fence pailings from a neighbour who was having his fence replaced and Adam ran the saw over them to make them the same lengths. I gave them an undercoat of white on Saturday and then, using the magazine as a reference, painted the pailings in shades of blue and a deep burgundy.

The chairs are the perfect props for this concept. I'm going to restore them slightly but I really do like the worn and unique look about them.

Up to...much!

Last night was great at Home Dining Room, dinner was tasty!
I finished my Hoooked Zpagetti cushion and garter stitch blanket.

On the weekend I made this pallet stool/table when I was at the farm.

I have really taken to woodworking ever since I saw DIY Furniture a few weeks ago and have plans to make the wardrobe and sideboard from the book. I also like the light and there is a trolley sunbed that is very clever!

Woodworking is a whole new world of possibilities x One that I am thrilled to have discovered.
Stephanie loves a bit of working with timber too. She owns a jigsaw and started making beautiful wooden boxes last year.

Lucky my husband is into tools and has drills, saws, jigsaw, planes, chisels e.t.c otherwise it would have been a bit of a big investment/expense starting up my new hobby! Although it's worth it, I really enjoy it!

The pallet stool came from a title One Block of Wood which we can stock for $15.00. It's a great little book. Whether you're new to woodwork, or an old hat, all you need is a bit of wood that you'd like to use up or just be curious to discover what you can create.

Nina Tolstrup has devised 15 simple, beautifully made projects from one block of wood. She demonstrates the versatility of wood with ideas ranging from a stylish Garden Bird Feeder (which I have started) to a sturdy Doorstop and Herb Box.

It's nice to have things to look forward to and November will be filled with fun times with friends, new and old!

I'll be shouting my best friend a spot in a Zentangle!! And I can't wait to show off our latest range of handpicked yarns from Hoooked Zpagetti.

It's lots of fun and everyone is really friendly.

Our Meetup knitting group, Looped, is meeting on Tuesday 2nd at 'Home dining room.'

I asked Glen if we could book a table and he wrote back that...

'I’d like to support your group by offering a complimentary glass of house wine or soft drink with any main meal purchased, also it is our 'roast @ Home' night where we offer roast beef, Yorkshire pudd and vegies for $19'.

So nice of him! We like supporting locals too.

For the rest of the weekend Stephanie and Duncan are exhibiting at the Craft and Sewing Show, Caulfield and then they will be packing up and going to Adelaide. (After just finshing up in Brisbane mind you.)

I am lucky to be heading to the country, where I have been looking fowards to going for ages !

Hi there,

I have discovered Shadowfolds. Have you seen this?

I was hopeless at maths in school but that won’t stop me from showing an interest in this craft that combines origami and mathematics!! I’m probably not going to try it, but I certainly do like it x

What are Shadowfolds? Well they are fabulous designs in fabric! Designs can be taken from architecture and interior decorations of many cultures and periods, especially taken from tiles…Shadow folds are works of art created by folding cloth in patterns based on classic geometric designs. By blending traditional patterns with a contemporary style, Shadowfolds evoke timelessness while also creating a sense of exciting innovation.

The way the fabric folds allow for the cloth to interact with light and beautiful patterns of light and shadow start to appear. To do it, you transfer a geometric design, punch holes in the corners/points and start sewing together. (Bit more to it than that ha ha)

Just magical! I've included some pictures that show the 'shadows' when interacting with light and the possible applications for this craft.

DIY Furniture

I can't help myself either! I have just bought a book!!!

This one is so inspiring, considering I'm building a shack, I figured I'm also going to build the furniture.

Inside this title, along with designs for seating and storage, it features projects for making your own bed, wardrobe, lighting and garden furniture. Each project has hand-drawn diagrams and easy-to-follow instructions on how to build them.

Unique designer pieces at a fraction of the cost! I'm taking this home with me tonight to study! I'll share with you some more cool stuff tomorrow.

We really hoped everyone would enjoy working with the Zpagetti product and by gosh I think they did! It was a really great night last Wednesday teaching Thuy, Joanne, Carolyn, Amanda and Sonya how to crochet bowls and bags... The girls picked it up so quickly that they were inspired on the night to start another project... Joanne how is your cushion coming along?

What I love so much about crocheting with Zpagetti is that all of the projects end up looking so different! Some really amazing results that I'm sure the group was proud of.

Don't forget if you want some social knitting/crochet 'time-out' of your busy life we have the sit and chat sessions on regularly...

One is tonight! And then Stephanie and I are teaching the Stitch 'n' Bitch Hawthorn Gallery girls on Thursday how to crochet with Zpagetti. Looking forwards to that!

Oh wow! More fabulous Japanese designs...

Yoshiko Tsukiori is a graduate of Joshi Bijutsu College. After working in apparel companies, Yoshiko became an independent freelance sewing designer. She creates a diverse range of clothing such as children's and babies' clothes and women's designer garments.

There are three more titles in the pipe works by this talented designer!

Zpagetti Basket Workshop

Hello!

These baskets are our latest idea for a workshop in Zpagetti. What do you think? I can't believe I made a basket! Actually two..My friend Anne popped it on her head (the bigger red one) and said 'what is it?'...'a hat?'...

Which was pretty funny because it does sort of look like the mad hatters hat!
But, no, it is a basket... Stephanie and I designed this pattern that starts by making a ring around your fingers instead of a slip knot and it decreases and then increase at the top so you can fold the top of the basket over onto itself. My idea! well actually I saw the design at a big Swedish superstore (you know the one) and really liked it.

The red one, I'm thinking...it would look good and be functional hanging from a hook off my bathroom wall. And the blue one is doing a great job storing my fruits on top of the fridge.

Our cosy scarf installation has ended, 92 days of winter, gee that went quickly!

Having an event that spanned winter was really fun.
We received so many wonderful entries.
72 scarves in total decorated the shop!

Our customers voted and these are the winning scarves.

1. First Place went to 'Pure Angora'.
A finger crocheted Angora scarf by Jane Welsh.

2. Second Place goes to 'In a Persian Market'.
This collage, free motion machine stitched scarf features layering and beading, made by Ros Byass.

3. And Third Place went to 'Scotty'.
The loom woven red and black scarf by Deborah Davies.

Congratulations to the winners and also to each and every participant.
They were all so unique and amazing and just being a part of the installation was an inspiring thing to do.

There's nothing quite like a cute dress to spruce up your wardrobe.

Sato Watanabe loves designing and making clothes. She is the author of several sewing books published in Japan. This is her first book of designs published in the United States by Interweave. Now we have it! Bit exciting!

I just thought you might like to look at some of the dresses that feature inside!

One of the designs 'I Am Peekaboo Sleeves' transforms a simple square of fabric into an elegant one-piece dress. The top edge of each peekaboo sleeve is completely open, secured with only one button at the neckline edge and one at the sleeve end. The simple dress is gathered with multiple rows of stitching at the waist and cinched with a drawstring ribbon. You could wear this one alone or in cooler weather, with a jumper underneath.

Did you know "around the mid 1970s the quilt moved from being just a decorative functional object whose primary purpose as a bed covering was to provide warmth and comfort at night to being a medium with which to explore a wide range of creative an artistic endeavours.

The catalyst for this is generally held to be the 1971 exhibition 'Abstract Design in American Quilts', held at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. The quilts were displayed on white walls and the impact they made encouraged critics to draw parallels between these works by largely anonymous women and the work of the Abstract Expressionism movement.

Following this upsurge of interest, Nancy Crow, Joan Schulze and Michael James became three of the most influential makers in the USA and in the UK Pauline Burbridge, Mary Fogg, Diana Harrison and Michele Walker were also inspired to begin making and exhibiting art quilts."

Craft Bar is back

Some time ago I installed a craft bar in our window, we had a sewing machine set up for people to play and 'have a go'. It was really good fun, I loved it when I heard comments.."can I really try it out?".

I re-installed the theme today...After much thought about father's day and what playful concept could we have instore, I came up with an idea of "Make a card for dad'.

It's simple, you start by tracing a template onto beautiful coloured paper and then you cut out the paper silhouette (big dog or little kitten). The next step is to stick it to some thick card and embellish galore with coloured pencils, crayons, textas and a piece of string or ribbon...

It would be great if you could tell your family and friends there is a fun thing to do and that they can make a cool card for dad at the Can Do Books craft bar for just $1.00.

(worth it! The look on your Dad's face will be priceless)

My Auburn Village

Welcome to my Auburn Village.
A lot goes on in this neck of the woods!

It is really an amazing place, with historical buildings and some really great local shopping.
And it's starting to feel like home. It's been almost 18months since we relocated and I thought to share with you what I have discovered.

My adventures start with a hot drink from home dining room. Glenn has an eclectic style and it's such a treat to have my tea served in a vintage tea cup. Ask him if you can have a squizz upstairs at the dining room! Very retro-cool.

Then I'll wander down past Bingo Betty and Perfect Pieces to the newsagent for my magazine fix and occasional grab a mini pie from the bakery and some organic veggies for dinner from Sprout..just a little further down is the op shop-love poking around in here-and then you'll see Peony perfumery.

If you go a little further under the railway bridge you'll get to Scarlet Jones, here you can pick up some lovely clothing from France, America, Spain... Unique!

Then cross over the road and drift back along to the wine sellers and next door to that is my all time favourite shop, Est Australia. I adore the string, the smells, the handmade goodness, the paper...oh...the shoes! Everything is pretty to look at! I'm in love with this shop, everyone close to me gets a birthday present from here...

You'll go past Silvana Tedesco and Lucy loves Charlie (where my Valentines day flowers came from xx) a few more coffee shops and then you'll be back to Burwood Road.

There is so much to see and do in our area.

At the moment you could visit Felternative, a contemporary felt exhibition by the Victorian Feltmakers, it's on at our local town hall.

Recently the village traders involved Swinburne Tafe design students and asked them to come up with some concepts for the branding of our shopping village.

The concept we liked involves street art installations similar to Banksy's work. Which I think could be very exciting and intriguing.

Allow a little extra time if your in our area, to have a wander down Auburn Road...you may be pleasantly surprised! Here are some links to my favourite people and places.

Kaffe Quilts in Sweden

Skansen Museum in Stockholm-the oldest open-air museum in the world- is the fascinating location Kaffe has chosen to display his latest collection of quilts. The colourful wooden farmsteads and the grand town houses with their painted and stencilled interiors, furnished with pottery and textiles make a brilliant setting for the quilts.

In this title the special feature, apart from the collection of quilts from Kaffe, Brandon Mably, Philip Jacob's and Corienne Kramer...more, is on Kaffe himself.

It tells us how he goes about creating his quilts. Photographs accompanied by text and quotes illustrate the stages of quilt construction, showing fabric choices and the changes made during the design process. This is a great opportunity to learn how a master does it!

It's complete with detailed written instructions, coloured piecing diagrams, templates and tips and techniques section that covers all the piecing methods used.

I was feeling cashed-up and bought myself a product I have wanted for over a year now!!
The Picasso (100% wool) yarn from dairing is about 80m long and chunky!

At the Craft and Quilt Fair, Melbourne, I watched Teresa demonstrate her arm knitting method.
Later that night I knitted this scarf in about 20 mins!! It's a super quick technique. Just amazing.

From learning with my arms/hands, I was able to pick-up the actions of knitting. After a few attempts with the red zpagetti yarn I had cast onto a needle using the arm knitting technique.

Whoa! Surprised myself.

I showed Stephanie my cast on method and she was impressed I had figured out a technique that worked! (even if it wasn't technically correct) Stephanie gave me a quick lesson and now I can cast on, garter stitch and cast-off using needles.

I have undone my arm knitted scarf and will attempt to knit it with the big (12mm) bamboo zpagetti needles. Just to see how that goes...Teresa throws her wool into hot water and then into the washing machine, literally shocking the yarn...which finishes off the process. But I'm not ready to stop playing yet! I think I might undo it afterwards and arm knit it again, then felt later...endless possibilities..how much fun!

If anyone wants to come along to our knitting/crochet evening this Wednesday, I can show you what I learnt from watching Teresa's arm knitting method.. 6-9.30pm at the shop, 608 Burwood Road, Hawthorn. We are a friendly bunch, socially knitting/crocheting. Beginner friendly!

Zentangle Fun

I am really enjoying Tangling whenever I get to it. I still find it hard to explain it when people ask what I am doing. I have always loved making things but have not done any/much drawing but when I first saw this online after hearing someone talk about it I knew with a bit of practice I would enjoy it.
For me there is no end use required. I get the suggestion that they could be coasters or used in cards or I am asked what they represent....hmmm. I also Like the smallness of the "tiles" as I am not faced with the need to cover a big piece of paper with something.

Hi I'm Amanda, a guest blogger for today. I'm doing work experience at Can Do Books this week and have been enjoying helping Megan with the new window displays as well as looking at all the books. I found out about Can Do Books through this book I got for my birthday last year. When it came around to choosing somewhere to go for work experience I wasn't really sure about where to go but remembered the shop and thought it would be a good place to go to get some experience in retail. The projects in this book are really cute and are a good way to combine simple crochet techniques to make great presents. Above are some of the Amigurumi that I made, Zelda Zebra and Ellie Elephant. The patterns are easy to follow and there are a range of projects.

Our first Zentangle Workshop

We had our first Zentangle workshop on Saturday with Andree Morgan. I can safely say we all had an inspiring time with gentle encouragement to make our marks on paper. There were nine of us and I can't show you a photo of the times we were creating our own patterns on the delightful paper tiles as I didn't even think about photography!
The photos below were taken at the end of the day when we all admiring each others works of art.
I love the look on Rosalie's husbands face as he looks through the window.

We have scheduled two more workshops 21 August and 24 August.Once the word spreads they will be a sell out.

String Gardens

A genius horticulturalist is also featured in The New Artisans... Fedor van der Valk is ..."more than green-fingered; he is gifted with an ability to tame Mother Nature and extract the beauty at her core..."
This style of hanging plant is a variation on kokedema, which is a Japanese botanical style.
In the case of String Gardens, plants have to find their balance while growing larger and getting heavier. Fedor's dream is to live above the moving clouds in a quiet apartment filled with plants! But in the meantime he tries to create a similar dimension through his work where bulbs, jasmine, clematis, passionflower, rare orchids and many other exotic and ancient plants are the floating living stars.
Think I might have to try the DIY lesson I found on Design Sponge...It would make a good window!

The rustier the better!

I've done some more flipping through the massive proof copy of The New Artisans and I like this today!

Severija, born in Lithuania, is a highly regarded contemporary gallery artist who uses the technique of cross stitching to create her work and chooses every day, utilitarian metal objects as the ‘heroes’ of her work; objects that evoke comfort and routine. She often uses a simple language of symbols: flowers stand for beauty; lids, buckets, watering cans and shredders relate to the domestic, material side of her life. It’s a stunning contrast between rusty metal and pretty cross-stitch-sturdy and soft! Holes are drilled according to a pre-set pattern that will later be stitched by hand with cotton threads. Have a little look at her website, it’s in Russian but you won’t need to speak the language to understand the art! x In particular set 3. The “Way of Roses” series shows car hoods, which evidently make the perfect sturdy canvas for extraordinary cross-stitch designs!

Orizomegami

This is not a new idea-Orizomegami has been practiced in Japan and around the world for centuries. If you work with fabrics, you might notice similarities between orizomegami and shibori or itajime.
The author of this title, Kristin Lawson, says..."I'm not an artist. I have trouble drawing and choosing pretty colour combinations. But I noticed that I was producing beautiful papers despite my lack of artistic ability." I love this! (by-the-way, reminds me of Zentangle).
While the folds in this book have been developed for paper, with a few modifications they can easily be adapted for fabric...it offers a few tips on how to do this...what is so great about this craft is you can only control the final result to a certain degree. The process has a life of it's own that each paper or fabric you dye is completely unique and a surprise when you unfold it and the pattern is revealed.
It's true, there are infinite numbers of fold and dye possibilities awaiting discovery!

I like this title so much for the stories. Louise spent time visiting food producers of all descriptions as she travelled around Australia for ABC Rural Radio, specifically a popular segment called the Cold Esky Challenge. It's an insight into the agricultural heartland of Australia as well as treasured recipes from local chefs, CWA members and the producers who know the produce best! Meet Keith Morris a builder-turned farmer who's very proud of his 'piece of paradise' in Far North Queensland. 'Many years of blood, sweat and tears have gone into his land, to transform what was once a small sugarcane farm with sadly depleted soil into a vibrant eco system churning out Paw paw the way nature designed them-organic' he says. Then there's Roger Schmitke who was the first person to grow a commercial garlic crop in South Australia who says....'the area is prominently citrus and wine, so many people thought I was wasting my time. I would go into Waikerie with a pallet of 50 cartons of garlic to be transported to Adelaide. A local came up to me on the ferry one day and questioned me about one pallet of garlic a week as he had a full truckload of tomatoes. When I told him my one pallet was worth more than his truckload he never questioned me about my one pallet again.' From Almonds and Avocados to Egg Plant and Green Tea, Onions, Pomegranates, Prawns, Oysters and Yabbies…It's all here, it's Australian and it's very interesting.

In a tangle

Here's the latest window. It's Zentangle time in a couple of weeks, so this is in preparation. I painted the inside of the windows with Stephanie's acrylic paints and made a folding screen from cardboard to match. Then suspended Andree's beautiful drawings from the ceiling and voila! One attention grabbing window...I just wanted to make a fuss over Andree, her CZT achievements and her first workshop! Congratulations x We are looking forwards to learning from you.

My first scarf made of 8-10 ply Merino wool slubby, from Dairing, varied from thick and thin as I tried to be consistent and loosely crochet. Actually a tricky product to work with, from a beginner’s perspective, it was extremely hard to undo when I kept noticing I couldn't keep a straight edge. The yarn is varied, so maybe my scarf is meant to be too! It’s so fluffy and warm and I feel very lucky that I can wear wool around my neck and face. I decided, after undoing it multiple times, that "hey! you need to just go with it and enjoy the results". I thought it was too hard to learn to crochet, but I've since realised it was because I never tried! This scarf is a little unconventional, it’s my mini blanket and it makes me feel very happy and cosy on a cold Melbourne day. Can we inspire you to give crochet a go too? x

Lots To See At the Sydney Timber & Working with Wood Show.

We had a stand at the Sydney Timber & Working with show over the weekend. As usual there were many tools and gadgets available to keep a woodworker happy and the displays of finished items was inspiring. The scrollwork cathedral was truly amazing and won frist prize in the scrollwork section for Ken Fields.

We had a great selection too and were able to meet some of our mail order customers.

A new feature at the show was Designers on Show and the two stand opposite me were a feast for the eye! The bags by Mark are so beautiful. Page Shoes are hand made in Sydney. You can choose you style, heel and colour. On top of that the shoes can be made to fit. I have odd feet and after about half an hour we came decided to go for the same length but to add a bit of extra width for my tight foot.

I can't wait for them to arrive in the mail!

The Textile Art Festival in Brisbane was a 9-5 show, which meant not much time for exploring, I just managed to squeeze some tourist stuff in! I visited Roma Street Parkland . It is the largest urban subtropical garden in the world. With five individually designed precincts: Upper Parkland, Celebration Precinct, the Forest and Fern Gully, the Lake Precinct and the Spectacle Garden. With a web of pathways and boardwalks, you cross over and pass through cascading waterways and rocky outcrops and my favourite, the Spectacle Garden, includes a collection of seasonal flowers, herbs and water features. Significant artwork and a dramatic water wall make this precinct a must see. Also, we dined at Hollywood Gardens a couple of nights but unfortunately the pictures are not good. It is a rainforest oasis in the heart of the Spring Hill! Imagine how happy I was to discover just what I was intending to report on!

Also visited the Brisbane Winter Festival. Take a look at that link, you might like to visit when it's installed in a city near you! Lots of fun X .

I promised that I would delve deeper into The New Artisans ...

Two things I like so far...This Bailey Doesn't Bark 'Postcup' comes with instructions to clean with soap and water then apply a message or art with the Pebeo porcelain pen. Allow to dry for 24 hrs after application then bake in oven for 35 minutes. Porcelain paint will set permanently once baked. I like it!

But this is spectacular! Not convinced it will keep me toasty warm, but it sure does look amazing. This is the work of Elisa Strozyk of Germany. It's hard to imagine, as we are used to experiencing wood as a hard material, but Elisa has researched a way of making it flexible and soft! This Young Designer was a prize winner of the German Design Awards for her process of creating a flexible wooden surface, which involves deconstructing wood veneer, which is attached to a textile base and then cut into tiles, and these are stuck together by hand. Elisa found that a triangular shape allowed for lots of movement. It can be rolled up, laid flat or sculptured in dramatic ways.

I'm going back to Brisbane this Thursday where I want to start collecting images of green walls and roofs. ?! What is this? Well we have a new CSIRO title called Living Architecture (more Pics here) that has inspired me. It's just so fascinating...Green living in urban environments. I love it!

Look at these lovely silk scarves that arrived for the cosy installation! Yum! And also pictured is the sun rising on Saturday morning when I was visiting my shack. The entire valley was filled with cloud that looked like marshmallow's, just stunning.

We have been so lucky to meet and get along so well with both of our class hosts since we decided to branch out into hosting events...There will be more of this type of thing throughout the last half of this year as Stephanie and I have got a lot out of the workshops and I know those who have participated have thoroughly enjoyed themselves too!

Hello! I have been away in Brisbane for the timber & working with wood show at the RNA showgrounds. It was my first large-ish show all by myself!

The hardest part about doing a show of this size by yourself, well to me anyway, is setting up our timber bookcases! I sweated (and swore...um-mah) getting them square and just when I thought I had one bookcase assembled a shelf would fall out and crash to the ground. Not the kind of attention I was looking for! ha ha.

The above pic is proof I finally managed them into place x On the first night I mingled with other exhibitors at a BBQ hosted by Everything Exhibitions & Events. I have made new friends, Bev Unwin a talented machine embroiderer who had an exhibit, Di and Jane of Upholstery Supplies.com.au , Melbourne. (They run traditional upholstery classes in case you might want to repair an old chair!) And Pam and Jenny from Gifkins Dovetail...all lovely ladies who made my show experience an enjoyable one!!

So there you have it, 4 days of timber talk and adventures after work. I went to Beastie Burgers and Limes Rooftop Bar. (Pictured) Also made progress on my stitching...

A Great Book Review

We posted a blog last month offering a free book with a catch. Georgia offered to write a review in return for a free book and here is the result.

I love the Beauty Masks and Scrubs book! Thanks so much Megs for giving it to me. They have some great recipes. I'm going to try one over the next few days, maybe the 'Country Dairy' to start off with as it only has egg and greek yoghurt! That's the great thing, most of the ingredients I already have! But I would like to try one of the clay masks but will have to hunt around for the ones they suggest..not quite sure where to buy it from! I think the scrubs look great as well, and I love getting facials so maybe I'll make it and get mum to apply for me...cheap solution for a special treat considering I'm saving to go overseas! And now I'll look lovely and fresh when I leave!

India Flint has previously written a book called Eco Colour, which drew on twenty years of her experience and experimentation with natural dying techniques and most of her dyes can be found in the average home garden. India has a second book publishing in July 2011.

We're Hoooked!

Gwen from Hoooked Zpagetti dropped off lots of amazing yarns to us on Thursday. Yum! my fav is the navy blue and white ball, but honestly they all look so fun and fresh that it will be hard to choose one ball for the workshop... Anyway something nice for you to look at...a display. In the 3rd pic, and hanging, are the handles you can choose from. They are really nice. Enjoy!

By the way blogger was down all yesterday and the winning comment from Stitch with... giveaway was lost. It did come through to me, so I know who it was but please you need to re-comment x

Stitch with...?

This is a book on our website, the projects are in a classic colour scheme of taupe, cream and red. Which is quite nice actually. I have started the alphabet and it's looking pretty good... Really easy to understand with good diagrams and text that explains the techniques...It's really sweet and it's all about beginning to stitch.

I have one copy to giveaway... If you feel like finding it, simply post who the author is! And what the eight motif chapters are...

I'm having the day off tomorrow, so I'll congratulate the finder on Saturday!!Good luck x

Zentangle Workshop

I am seeing Zentangles everywhere since meeting with Andree Morgan, one of only 3 Certified Zentangle Teachers in Australia. Known as a CZT for short, they are able to teach Zentangle to you and groups.

Which is exactly what we are going to do! July 2nd 2011 Andree will be running a Zentangle workshop here at the bookstore..So very excited...
